Gym Class Heroes at American Eagle Show

by Pete Richards

Gym Class Heroes

Anerican Eagle Outfitters just held their winter ski-themed spring break at Squaw Valley USA in Olympic Valley, California, a couple of days ago. For those who made it to see Gym Class Heroes, it was apparently a great show. I live in Toronto, so hell naw, I didn’t attend. I did see some recent pictures of the guys, however, sporting some new looks. Eric just cut his hair short and Matt was sporting a full ginger beard, which threw me off for a second. There are some videos of the band before the show in which they shout out some GCH message boardies. I posted those Youtube videos below. Travie shouts out his message board fans and Dasishi does a bit of the same in two parts, as well as talk about his “bear” jacket, which I have no idea what that is. Check out all three videos below.

The American Eagle Outfitters spring break thing happened between 3 – 5 PM on March 1st in Tahoe City, California. The purpose of the event was to give people an alternative to the beach during spring break, hosting a massive party on the slopes. Other activities included American Eagle Outfitters lounge with exciting giveaways, live DJ, as well as Adirondack chairs and fire pits for relaxing and warming up. Here is the Gym Class Heroes information taken from the AE web site:

“Take a little bit of rap, mix in some rock, add some R&B with a bit of funk and you’ve got Gym Class Heroes. Fully of energy, humor, and socially conscious lyrics, these guys can turn it up and crank it out. These guys own the beat and are known for using live instruments and musicians rather than looped samples to make their distinct sound. Now they’re going to heat things up at Squaw Valley USA with live outdoor performances for AE Spring Break 2008 on the slopes.”

    I’m mystified….

Is this blog about GYM class heros…(a class of heros called GYM)..OR

gym CLASS HEROS…..(middle class people who have been to the gym and become heros)….OR

GYM CLASS: Heros…..(the biggest and best of your Gym class)..

And just WHAT exactly IS heroic about these guys?….With people busting their butts and dieing in Bahgdad every day, you guys have a chance at calling yourself HEROS for making Coffee and a few phone calls for the highly paid and mighty?….or for any other of the “talent” services provided?

PROOF once again of the advice given by David bowie’s first manager…”LOOK like a celebrity, ASSOCIATE with celebrities, and YOU TOO will be SEEN as a celebrity.”

Like most music of this day and age, it’s all about WOMEN, MONEY and PUBLICITY…all in that order…..the same reasons that 60’s musicians got into the business….Do you guys play anything apart from KEYBOARDS?

Do you even WRITE your own compositions?…or just rip somebody elses off, click in a few sound effects, and sell to Afro-Americans who won’t listen to anything other than Afro-Americans?

Afro-American music USED to be about BEAUTIFUL SOUNDS…..ALL MUSIC and NO MESSAGE

“Oh..We used to do most everything,
The sweetest song that I can sing,
    Oh BABE-EH!”….CHICAGO

ANALYZE THAT…it doesn’t MEAN anything at all, really, but it was BEAUTIFUL to listen too…and the list from Black america just went on and on…too many great ARTISTS to list…BUT NOW

It’s all MESSAGE and NO MUSIC….if you honestly think you are in this “business” for anything apart from the music…STOP Now.

People like Otis Reading, Ray Charles….too darned many to list and all had TALENT…rather than just contacts and a synthesizer….

I personally don’t care how many “bitches” you entertain, how much money you have…..or how many contacts you milk for you “act”

Please bring back MOTOWN…..what we have today is such a throw away item…..

  2. Christopher Says:

Post some of their MUSIC here…..I want to prove to myself that these guys PLAY the damned instruments before I put down my hard earned cash for a new sound or act….POST SOME MUSIC….we will leave the Hero worship for those that don’t call themselves heros….

  3. Emily Sear Says:

    that christopher guy is insane!
he seems to know a lot about what being a hero is but he cant spell heroes.
    calm down dearest :)

  4. Christopher Says:

Speeling….if thats all you’ve got in reply, then I suggest you make it plain……try a little criticism based on something sound…..

No comments on Gym Class Heroes?…..

How about comments on anything….easy to attack me and not have anything to attack me WITH….

And Insane?…..my God, if thats the best you have, then I’d rather be classed as such than as a know-nothing like Emily….

As I say, do we have YET ANOTHER “hip” group of singers that can’t play instruments?…Whose “music” they themselves had very little to do with in the actual composition of such?….Or is it just another group of Afro-Americans that have lost the MUSIC and are in the business for the bitches, money and clothes?….

Based on the lack of response, I would definately say the latter…

SPELLING OK this time?…..So what do you have in reply, more ATTITUDE and no musical talent….

TYPICAL…..come up with something original for the criticism…and stop calling yourselves HEROS when the real ones that don’t get as much publicity are closer to death than any of you people will ever be….

By the way….HEROES is AMERICAN spelling….HEROS is ENGLISH, which ill-educated people like yourselves just do not know…..I thought Americans were smarter than that…

Laughable really….come at me with something better….

  5. Christopher Says:

AND in case you hadn’t noticed, the first word is not spelt correctly…..so, if you want to take a stab at that one , feel free….it’s all you have….

GAME SET and MATCH to ME!

    Thankyou linemen, thankyou ballboys.

  6. Christopher Says:

    Me fail english?….UNPOSSIBLE….

    WHERE is that one from?

Speeling corrections are from people with NO COMEBACK…..like you…

  7. Christopher Says:

Get rid of the MESSAGE….Bring back the beautiful SOUNDS….

Grand Master Flash and the Cadillac Five have done “The Message” a LONG time ago….as he says

    “It’s like a jungle sometimes,
It makes me wonder how I keep from going under….”

We’ve heard all the attitude….now lets get back to the beautiful MUSIC….

  8. Christopher Says:

And oh CHRIST….I’m “Top Commenter” here…

What a bunch of AIRHEADS you all are….I’ll probably be deleted before to long….

  9. Christopher Says:

HAH!…..looks like you guys at JIM GLASS HEROES (spelt correctly) really ARE after bitches, money and publicity….

Try learning to play instruments and reading music….you may find you, too, can create something BEAUTIFUL….but, that might take EFFORT, rather than learning a few dance routines and getting everybody else to write the music…..

WHY is Afro-American music so BANKRUPT these days?

Comments from the people?…Not likely….You guys would have trouble stringing 10 words together that did not invilve bitches, money and your “respect”….

  10. Christopher Says:

OH dear….more spelling errors….I will immediately move to the back of the class, and sit with all the other FLUNKIES of the current Afro-American music industry…

    BRING BACK MOTOWN…..The Delltones, etc.,

REAL MUSICIANS WITH SOME GENUINE TALENT AND PERSONALITY…

Ditch the attitude, brother….play the MUSIC instead…

  12. Christopher Says:

I’m not letting go of this one…

Could somebody please explain why AfroAm music is ALL MESSAGE and NO MUSIC and why the practioners of such can’t play instruments or read music…but they can dance in unison…..

    BRING BACK REAL TALENT…

    Get rid of manufactered TRASH….

  13. Christopher Says:

I am sorry…MANUFACTURED….spelling corrections aside, does anybody actually have an answer….or do I have to leave a message on EVERY POST?

  14. Emily Sear Says:

erm try listening to the music you are criticizing. or even better, catch a live show. it helps :)

  15. Emily Sear Says:

You dont change the spelling of a bands name whether you come from England or not. I’m from Cumbria, in ENGLAND.

  16. Christopher Says:

Catch a LIVE show of musicians that can’t play instruments?

    NOT LIKELY….

    ALL ATTITUDE…NO MUSICAL TALENT

Bring back the musicians that actually PLAY something…rather than just “discoveries” made by industry moguls looking to sell discs to kids that can’t play instruments or read music either…..

    I say again…ALL MESSAGE…NO MUSIC…NO TALENT…..

  17. Christopher Says:

I was LONDON BORN….Euro passport, just like you…..reside in Australia….we actually have MUSCICIANS here, not just kids with attitude, churning out rhymes that anyone could have written, and getting real musos to come up with the music, while their managers get them dance instructors to work out a simple routine…..my god, it’s a PRODUCT….and you “buy it”….then throw it away when the next “group” comes along to do the same damn routine all over again….

WHEN they can play their own instruments and write a melody that actually fits, then people such as myself will listen to the message…

Until then, it’s a gigantic exercise in MARKETING….I’m surprised someone from Britian doesn’t see “products” like these idiots for what they really are….

And if this is the ‘official’ website for Jim Glass Heroes, then where are the answers for all of my criticisms?

They don’t have any, because the truth hurts…it’s a wonder my comments have not been DELETED in true web fashion….shows you how much notice is really taken by the participants of this marketing exercise themselves….

More fool you for putting your money down….

  18. Christopher Says:

I challenge anyone to prove me wrong….

    RAP has a silent C….

  19. Christopher Says:

    oops….spelling errors….

    Gee…I must be wrong then…..

If I am, where are the replys from outraged MUSOs defending their art?

  20. Christopher Says:

And NO…I’m not a frustrated Muso without a break….I can’t play any instruments or read music, but I do recognize a marketing exercise when I see it…And the American music industry is FULL of people like these fools, who want everything that the music industry has to offer (bitches on tap, lots of money) without having to do much at all to deserve it….

    Answer that one….

  21. Renae Says:

If you stopped wasting time spamming Pete’s site and watched a performance as Emily suggested then you would see that they DO play live instruments which would require the skill of reading music. Although Travis (who does vocals) does not play during performances, he does play drums as well.

Are you racist? That was a rhetorical question, because it’s actually quite obvious. You’ve never heard them, but you see a couple of Black people and automatically assume that it’s a group of rappers talking about hoes and money? Yeah, that’s racist whether that’s how you want to define yourself or not. But FYI, the only full African American in this group is actually the guitarist, and he was recently named by Alternative Press magazine as one of the three best guitarists in 2007-08. The content of their music spans many subjects– everything except hoes and money, so again, you’re wrong in your [racist] assumptions.

Stop being a jerk, and go YouTube a performance. If you don’t like them, that’s your opinion, but opinions are like assholes: everybody has one, but everyone doesn’t want to see it.

BTW, this isn’t their official site.

  22. Christopher Says:

    No…not a racist…quite the opposite

just sick and tired of “new” acts that aren’t so new after all….no originality

  23. Christopher Says:

i COULD NOT GIVE A FLYING TOSS IF THIS IS THEIR OFFICIAL SITE OR NOT…

Black American music has lost it’s originality, dynamism, class and talent….

to be replaced with ‘manufactured’ acts like this one…

IF ‘travis’ plays the drums “quite well”, and another of them the guitars….then lets see them put it all together in a performance….rather than getting someone to write/perform the music while they prance about on stage and give us all the ‘attitude”

I LOVE AFRO-AMERICAN MUSIC….but this garbage is just not the own original work….it’s just more manufactured “product”, before these idiots have had their fill, before the next lot come along to do the same thing….

Bring back the ’soul’ and sound of the great stuff we used to hear….not this technoshit.

ANYONE CAN SING and do a silly dance routine…

Not too many people can write, play instruments, produce a melody to fit it, combine it into a live show, AND sound listenable…thats why we pay musicians so much….for their uniqueness…

These idiots are dime a dozen….to be replaced by other talentness bums who can just play an instrument, and have not got the time or the musical education/talent to put an “act together, let alone the thousands of hours of rehearsal it takes to make it all look spontanious…

Just another group of “singers”….and you idiots buy the attitude, and forget the fact that its all just PRODUCT rather than an artistic acomplishment…

JIM GLASS HEROES….another con from the music industry that cant find people young enough to appeal to young girls that buy records, and have to give us these talentless bums as a substitute, and get the real musos to do everything else..

YOU spend money on this shit….I don’t…

I listen to it for free…because thats all it’s worth…

  24. Christopher Says:

Oh and of course…you have to push the ‘racism’ button to distract attention from the facts…

Talentless bums that cant write or perform..getting real musos to play the sounds while they prance about on stage…

Micheal Jackson was a truely original talent…..these bums are just after the bitches and the money…get rid of them…

Bring back music played and produced by real musos

  25. Emily Sear Says:

You don’t know what you’re talking about. Have you actually seen them prancing about on stage whilst other people play instruments? Or are you just presuming that?

  26. Christopher Says:

Emily….I watched a video on this website, looking at the “creative process”, and watching one of the band telling a session muso what he wanted to hear….describing it in terms that made sence only to him, while the muso sat there and attempted to put it all into practice…

Reminds me of Yoko Ono attempting to tell David Spinoza how to play a guitar, as she did at her recording sessions where David was hired to breathe life into Yoko’s “conceptualist” garbage….

I don’t have anything against Travis or the band, but if they were real musos, they wouldn’t need session musicians…

Another manufactured product brought to you by the industry moguls…

If Travis reads this, I hope he’s satisfyed with the results, adding nothing whatsoever to music as an artform and contributing to the current cycle of “productionism”…

OTIS READING WOULD ROLL OVER IN HIS GRAVE IF HE COULD SEE WHAT AFRO-MUSIC HAS BECOME…

It just another gigantic excuse for bitches, money and publicity….WHO CARES ABOUT THE MUSIC…as long as the good ol’money machine keeps rolling!
